Brief Thoughts On Neruda

I once read a lot of Pablo Neruda’s poetry. That came to an end some time around 1998 when I read one of his odes to Stalin. It had the effect of making me reevaluate all of his poetry. I had to conclude that the moral failure that allowed him to venerate Stalin was mirrored by an aesthetic failure in his body of work, or, perhaps better, that they were one and the same failure.
